The TURBOMILL 40NS is an electro-permanent magnetic chuck developed by the WALKER BRAILLON MAGNETICS division (Montmélian, France). It replaces vices, clamps and strap clamps – the workpiece is held across its entire face, so the tool has free access from every side except the seating face. Instead of repositioning clamps throughout the day, you simply press a button.

How it works

The holding force is generated by permanent magnets. Electricity is applied only as a short pulse when switching on and off, reversing the polarity of the magnets. During machining itself the chuck is de-energised – it consumes no power, does not heat up, and the workpiece stays safely clamped even during a power failure. This is the fundamental difference from conventional electromagnetic chucks, where thermal expansion feeds straight into your accuracy and a power cut means a loose part in the machine.

The magnetic circuit is designed to concentrate the field into the workpiece area as much as possible – hence a holding force of up to 17 kg/cm².

Why the 40 version

A pole pitch of 56 mm (40 + 16 mm) and a magnetic field depth of 20 mm make the TURBOMILL 40NS an all-rounder: the deep field handles heavy roughing at high metal-removal rates, yet serves equally well for light milling and finishing. One chuck therefore covers the entire range of work with no changeover.

BURFR 10 control unit

The control unit ensures optimum magnetising and demagnetising of the chuck. It features a safety contact that prevents machining from starting while the chuck is not magnetised. An RS-232 interface is provided for connection to the machine control system; the unit is rated IP55 and supplied with 400 V.
